Directions:

St. James Place is probably not yet on any internet or GPS map because it is a brand new street. It is located off Harris Street about 1/4 mile before Redwood Acres (in the 3000 block of Harris). Going east on Harris toward Redwood Acres St. James Place will be on your left, almost directly across from Freese Avenue. The church is at the end of St. James Place.

Cultural pressures and influences are so intrusive and inwardly destabilizing that Christian spirituality becomes a forlorn pursuit unless the individual is embodied in a structure that gives corporate expression to private spirituality, in which the lone thread is woven into a fabric. In this sense, the local church creates its own Christian culture, its own set of values and ways of looking at the world, its own hopes and dreams, which, because they are corporately held and practiced, become normative. Unfortunately, too much church experience is not like this at all. Too often it amounts to little more than a glancing encounter with others, for a brief period of time, in which some inspirational stories are shared and hands are shaken. If members cannot give more of themselves to the churches than this, however difficult this may be, and if churches will ask for nothing more than this, then Christian spirituality will be that much more easily eroded by the torrents of modernity.

Where is the church? What is the church? Roman Catholics say that the church is where the bishop is. He constitutes the church. The left wing answers by giving their testimony — “It’s in my heart, in my experience, my conversion.” Luther proposed that the church is defined by the act of confessing, the actual act of declaring Christ and handing over the goods. Where the goods are being handed over, the actual handing over of Christ Jesus and His benefits to sinners — wherever that happens there is the church. The word of the gospel is what constitutes the church.
